More than 2000 saplings were planted by the Gentlemen Cadets (GC) and officers of Indian Military Academy (IMA) on Friday. The plantation drive was done in the sprawling campus of the IMA under the “Van Mahotsava” programme.
The drive was inaugurated by the Commandant of the IMA, lieutenant General S K Jha. Addressing the gathering, lt Gen Jha emphasised on the importance of the plantation drive and afforestation initiatives taken by the Government and other agencies throughout the country.
He said that the trees contribute to the environment by providing oxygen, improving air quality, climate amelioration, conserving water and soil conservation. The IMA Commandant highlighted the importance to preserve the indigenous species of trees through the plantation drive.
A communique of IMA said that the tree plantation drive was carried out at IMA near the War Memorial and it witnessed active participation by all age groups in the Academy.
The PRO of IMA Dehradun, lt Col Dinesh Sharma said that the academy keeps on planting trees as part of a mission. He added that the present initiative of increasing the green cover of the Indian Military Academy is a brain child of the present Commandant to ensure a better and cleaner environment. “It helps us fulfill our social and moral duties towards the environment,” he said.
