GDMC faces sudden patient surge

The associated hospital of Government Medical College (GDMC) was chock-a-block on Monday with considerable number of patients visiting OPDs of the hospital.

Dehradun and surrounding areas are reeling under the diseases like dengue, viral fever and many bacterial infections due to which a surge in number of patients in different hospitals of state capital is being witnessed. It is a normal trend that the number of patients on Mondays and after holidays increases in the GDMC hospital.

“More than 2200 new patients have registered themselves today and it is only 12.00 noon now. We are expecting that more than 2500 patients would make OPD slips today. The number of patients from last ten days is unusually high,’’ said one of a personnel stationed at the registration counter.  The patients were seen standing in long queues outside the registration counters, doctors’ chambers, pathology labs, billing and medicines counters.

“I was advised a blood test but by the time I reached the pathology lab it was closed for the day. The queues outside the registration, OPD and billing counter were long and took too much time. The hospital administration should open additional counters to cater extra patient load,’’ said Sushil Balodi, a resident of MDDA colony Kedarpuram.

The senior physician Dr Pravin Panwar said that this time of the year the patients suffering from seasonal diseases increase. He said that large number of people with complain of fever are coming to the hospital. The hospital authorities have set up three isolation wards for Dengue patients with a total capacity of 34 beds.  In this hospital 28 patients of dengue were admitted out of which the condition of one of them is critical.

When contacted, the Medical Superintendent (MS) of the hospital Dr K K Tamta said that two separate counters would soon become operational in the female wing of the hospital. He accepted that the patient load in the hospital has increased in recent times.
