The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun has failed to ensure civic sanitation in Dehradun.
With the MCD failing to get the Doon Valley Waste Management company to work as per the contract for collection and disposal of garbage, Urban Development Minister Pritam Singh Panwar and District Magistrate BVRC Purushottam have already held meetings with officials concerned and directed necessary action. However, at a time when garbage generation increases due to festivities, even the Minister’s instructions to clear the town of garbage by Monday do not seem have had the desired effect so far.
Dengue cases are rising in the State capital but the MCD is not yet able to facilitate the desired level of civic sanitation in town with garbage in most localities of the town not being lifted regularly for dumping. In spite of the rising mosquito population, the civic authority has not started proper fogging in the city. locals complain that they are unaware of the problems preventing the authority from ensuring proper garbage disposal but stress that they are concerned about the deteriorating sanitation level in the State capital.
Areas close to the homes of public representatives and public servants are cleared of the garbage more often than other areas. On the weekend, the State Urban Development Minister held a meeting with officials concerned and directed the MCD to take action against DVWM if it fails to follow the contract conditions.
The Minister has directed that all the garbage piled in town be cleared by Monday. However, locals point out that this does not seem possible unless the MCD and DVWM work overtime. Dehradun Mayor Vinod Chamoli also recently toured various areas of the city and pulled up sanitation supervisors for ineffective work. However, it is worth mentioning here that the Mayor has often stated that the attitude of the municipal administration is one of the factors preventing works from being executed effectively and efficiently.
During the MCD Board meet held on September 26, BJP councillors protested and even manhandled the Mukhya Nagar Adhikari Ashok Kumar for allegedly being apathetic towards work. Observers question whether simply taking action against the DVWM would yield the desired result as long as municipal administrators continue to elicit criticism for not being efficient and communicative.
