The district administration had sounded high alert in 83 villages on Saturday as the Ganga was flowing in high spate and the water level crossed the danger mark. The Ganga canal was closed till Kanpur on account of heavy silt deposition but on Sunday morning the canal flow was again resumed by the irrigation department, though the high alert continued in villages of laksar.
The intermittent rains lashing the entire district and torrential rains in uphills had raised the ganga water level above danger mark. It had reached 292.65 metres on Friday night. On Sunday morning the ganga river resumed its normal flow and reached its normal mark, nearly 3 metres below the danger level.
Speaking to the Pioneer, SDO upper ganga canal Sushil Kumar Yadav said, “The ganga is flowing at 291.5 metres so we have resumed the supply of water in ganga canal from 6 am on Sunday. The silt level had increased earlier beyond the permissible limits so the upper and eastern canal gates were closed.”
The disaster management team had started its rescue operations and displaced villagers of Raisi and Rampur villages to safe areas. 83 such villages in low lying areas are at risk so the high alert still continues, say the disaster management team.
The district disaster management officer Meera Kaintura said, “Since ganga water level had reached 292.6 metres which is just a metre below the danger mark, we vacated the people from laksar area to nearby dry places. With the stopping of rains, the situation is under control now. Still we have asked the people to be in alert mode.”
