Road traffic accidents have been a very common problem in the past. Now, it has become an epidemic particularly in developing countries. In our country, last year about one and a half lakh of people have lost their lives due to accidents.
At least one out of them who survived would become permanent physically handicapped due to fracture's complication like infection, nonunion and malunion" said Dr BKS Sanjay, Orthopaedic, while addressing a public awareness lecture and a free Orthopaedic and Gynae camp, which was inaugurated by State Technical & Medical Education Minister Harak Singh Rawat, at Sanjay Orthopaedic, Spine and Maternity Centre, Jakhan Dehradun on Sunday.
Rawat appealed to the doctors in the ceremony that their purpose of being doctors was to serve the people and not make wealth. According to Dr Sanjay, the basic principle of fracture treatment was to align it and to maintain the aligned position till fracture was healed. A nail, a plate or a fixator or plaster was used to maintain the aligned position. If fracture was complicated because of any reason then the doctor had to find out the cause of non union and that cause has to be fixed as soon as possible.
In such complicated fracture, patient may need more than one operation. If fracture is not united because of infection or because of loss of skin over the bone then patient need some soft tissue coverage procedure and Ilizarov ring fixator.
