The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun is struggling with a four-fold increase in garbage generated for Deepawali celebrations. The corporation expects to dispose of the garbage generated by the festivities in a few days.
It is pertinent to mention here that on an average the area under the purview of MCD generates at least 200 tonnes of solid waste per day.
Talking to The Pioneer, the MCD's senior city health officer Kailash Gunjyal said that there had been a four-fold increase in the quantity of garbage in the State capital following the Deepawali celebrations. He said,
"We are trying our best and will manage to clear it all within a few days," he said.
It should be noted here that the collection and disposal of solid municipal waste in Dehradun is often hampered by factors including mechanical faults in the garbage transport vehicles and labour issues among other problems.
With talk about the need for minimising pollution from Deepawali celebrations, one would have expected comparatively lesser garbage but this has not been the case this year.
As the data on levels of noise and air pollution in Dehradun on Deepawali also indicate, the people in most areas of Dehradun have generated considerable quantities of garbage in their festivities.
