In what may boost BJP’s chances in Pauri during the local body elections, former MLA and two time chairman of Pauri municipal council, Yashpal Benam formally joined the party here on Thursday. Speaking on the occasion, he said that he had joined the BJP with the hope that the desired developmental works in Pauri will be facilitated.
Getting the development done in Pauri is the only reason for joining the party, he said, while adding that the BJP State Government had released funds for the Pauri bus station within 1.5 years while the previous Congress-led State Government had not done so in three years.
BJP State president Ajay Bhatt said that Benam had so far won elections as an independent but had thought of joining a political party for the first time on being impressed by the BJP’s work.
Regarding the allegations levelled against Benam in the past, he said that in both the cases, he had been proven innocent.
On whether the BJP would field him as a candidate from Pauri in the local body election, Bhatt said that the candidature would be decided upon in the election committee meeting.
