Food security scheme: Admin fails to issue new ration cards

Published on:

Dehradun district administration has failed to issue new ration cards under National Food Security Scheme among the intended beneficiaries. large numbers of intended beneficiaries are not being provided with new ration cards under Scheme while those who do not come under this scheme are being issued the same by the district food and civil supply officer Shayam Ayra.

Uttarakhand Cabinet Minister and Dehradun district in-charge Minister Yashpal Arya chaired a meeting with the district officers here in Dehradun and expressed disappointment over the issue.

The Minister directed the district magistrate Chandresh Kumar Yadav to identify the people having been provided with the cards in both rural and urban areas despite not being entitled under the scheme.  These cards must be immediately cancelled, he said, stressing those entitled must be provided with the cards promptly.

Arya had directed the district officers to identify the intended beneficiaries under the scheme who live in slum areas. However, the cards remained elusive for them, he said.

He directed the district officers to call a meeting involving local MlA and other local public representatives in the first week of September to discuss ways as how to sort out the problem the people keep facing on the ground.

The officers were directed to ensure that not a single intended beneficiary is left out, he added.

Following the Minister’s direction, DM Yadav directed the DSO Arya to carry out the order.

Interestingly, when this correspondent had asked the DM recently why the district food and civil officers should not conduct random checking campaign (on sample basis) on the issue with many Doon residents having protested at DSO office against ration card distribution anomalies, he rejected outright that there was any such anomaly at all. He said one could register complaints at Complaint Redressal Cell and their concerns would be addressed.

Mention worthy, under National Food Security (NFS) Act, around 62 lakh state’s population have been covered. They are now being given five kilos of food-grains comprising three kilos of rice and two kilos of wheat per person for `three and `two per kg respectively.
