The disaster experienced in Uttarakhand during June has affected the academic future of school children in the disaster-affected areas of Chamoli district.

The academic life of students in disaster affected Pandukeshwar, lambagad, Bhyundar and various places in Urgam valley has been disrupted with school buildings and approach routes either being destroyed or damaged in the disaster apart from which many students have lost their certificates and other important documents when their homes were either destroyed or damaged.

The disaster in Uttarakhand on June 16-17 caused major devastation in different parts of the State with the government failing to provide relief and repair the damage in many areas more than two months after disaster struck. Many people have lost their homes while considerable area of agricultural land has also been lost in the calamity.

Due to homes being destroyed, many students have lost their high school, intermediate and graduation degrees and other education related certificates. This has created difficulties for the students affected by the disaster as without their academic certificates such students will face difficulties in trying to secure admission in higher classes or appear for competitive examinations.

Such a scenario has raised doubts among the affected students about their academic future. Ayushi Sharma of Pandukeshwar states that she lost her high school certificate when her home was swept away in the disaster. This is

presenting difficulties to her in securing admission in inter college.

Another student Anupama said that all her academic certificates from high school level to MA have been lost in the disaster. This will prove problematic for her when she decides to appear for a competitive exam.
