On assuming charge as the Dehradun senior superintendent of Police, Nivedita Kukreti Kumar said on Tuesday while unfolding her plans to improve policing in the district that her first priority would be to check road accidents taking increasing toll of lives. “To check mishaps occurring almost daily in the city and other parts of the district is a formidable task and a daunting challenge too,” she said. She said that she would have her focus trained on removing encroachments, narrowing the space of the roads in the market areas, particularly, the Paltan Bazaar, to ease the traffic movement. “We would remove the encroachments being made by the local shopkeepers and the cart vendors causing the traffic to crawl, compounding the woes of the commuters,” she said. “Besides, we would do everything to have the instructions of the state government rightly executed,” she stated.
Kukreti said that she would work to make the police force professional. “Steps would be taken to make police more responsive, pro-active and people- friendly,” she said, adding that people should reach the police station without the least hesitation when they feel that approaching police is the only option left to them to have their grievances redressed.
The 2008 batch IPS officer Kukreti earlier served as SP Pauri. Before assuming charge as Dehradun SSP, she was posted as assistant IG at police headquarters.
“We would ensure that FIRs are lodged in the police station concerned once a complainant approaches the police station. Apart from controlling crimes, emphasis will be laid on improving traffic situation in the state capital,” she said.
Kukreti made it clear to the police personnel that the department expects the police officers to be loyal towards laws and responsible. “Besides, they must try by all means to build an enduring and warm police- public partnership to revive public confidence in us,” she added.
She said crimes would be controlled through intensified patrolling. Unsolved cases of theft, dacoity, burglary and other crimes would be cracked shortly, she said while adding that direction has been given to the police officers to start investigation of such cases without delay. “We would do everything to stop crimes against women,” She said.
Kukreti said, "We will lay emphasis on making network of informers stronger aside from making the police department adequately tech- savvy to deal with the new trend of crimes.”
Beat police would be directed to be in contact with the locals and keep an eye on the people’s movement in their assigned areas. They must be vigilant too regarding the anti-social elements to nip chances of crimes in the buds, she added.
