'First Ever' kidney transplant successfully conducted at Max Hospital

Published on:

Max Hospital, Dehradun recently achieved one of its most significant milestones by conducting its first ever successful kidney transplant, the hospital sources claimed. The 56-year-old patient was on hemodialysis for the last  three months, they said.

Kidney transplant was performed by a team comprising  Nephrologist [Transplant physician],Dr Puneet Arora, HOD- Nephrology & Urologists [Transplant Surgeons], Dr Waheed Zaman, Sr Consultant Urology & Renal Transplantation, Dr. (Col) Daresh Doddamani, Sr. Consultant & HOD Urology who all have rich experiences of transplant medicine.

Dr Arora shared that about 10% of adult population has Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), the causes of which are varied and mainly includes Diabetes, hypertension, stone diseases, some inherited abnormalities etc. Because of the progressive nature of illness, many patients ultimately develop End stage Renal Disease (ERD) when along with medicines, they require some form of artificial support in the form of RRT (Renal Replacement Therapy) to remain alive and lead a fruitful life. The RRT includes Renal Transplant (best option), Hemodialysis and Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD). Because of growing population of Diabetes and Hypertension, each year about 2.5 lakh new patients develop ESRD in our country-but transplant takes place in only less than 1% cases (around 10,000 cases), because of lack of awareness and unavailability of adequate transplant facilities, he informed.
