Due to lack of awareness about lokpal appointed by the Government in each district, to bring transparency in Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) execution and redressal of complaints received from the job card holders, very few complaints related to irregularities in the scheme were received in Dehradun and other districts across the State.
In several instances, job card holders were seen protesting in the State capital because they were not given jobs under the scheme.
In spite of this, not a single job card holder has been given wages in Dehradun in cases where the department has not provided work.
Critics opine that due to lack of awareness about lokpal and low wages given to the job card holders in comparison to market rates, beneficiaries do not register complaint with the lokpal.
The Government should create awareness about the institution of lokpal so that MNREGS can be effectively executed in the state.
Dehradun lokpal JR lapar told The Pioneer recently that six complaints have been received in his office so far. Some complaints received in the office were not related to MNREGS. Anyone can register complaints related to MNREGS and their concerns would be addressed.
“The district administration should create awareness about the institution of lokpal so that problems faced by the job cardholders could be sorted out without day,” he added.
