As the wholesale prices of green peas would remain between Rs850 per quintal and Rs950 per quintal in February 2015 and March, 2015 respectively the scientists of the G B Pant University of Agriculture and Technology (GBPUAT), Pantnagar, have advised the farmers to take marketing and storage decisions of potato according to the price forecast.
The main objective of releasing price forecasts of selected agricultural commodities like green peas before sowing and during harvesting is to help the farmers engaged in cultivation of commodities like green peas and potatoes and to take right decision before sowing the crops or marketing the same, maintained GBPUAT.
The scientists managed to forecast the prices of the potatoes after conducting a market survey of Rudrapur regulated market, a major market for green peas in Uttarakhand. As the scientists informed, the wholesale price of green peas was Rs700-800 per quintal in February-March 2014. A team of scientists including Dr A N Shukla and Rojani Mishra under the supervision of Dr Anil Kumar, Principal Investigator of the GBPUAT, Pantnagar, had conducted market survey of Rudrapur regulated market.
India ranks second in the world’s total green peas production, contributing around 21.04 per cent. This crop is grown over 370 thousand hectares in India ranking second among the countries having maximum area cultivated for green peas. The yield in India is 9.7 tonnes per hectare whereas it ranges between 10 and 11 tonnes per hectare in other major green peas producing countries, the scientists said.
UP, Haryana, Jharkhand, HP, MP, Punjab, WB, Chhattisgarh and Uttarakhand are the major green peas growing states which together contribute about 93 per cent of India’s total production, they added.
