Baisakhi has been celebrated with zeal with the farmers, especially those of the Sikh community settled in the Terai region of State, including Haridwar, joining in the festivities.

The festival relates to harvesting of wheat and other crops. Sardar Gurcharan Singh from Amritsar is now in Haridwar to celebrate the occasion with his relatives said the festival epitomises thanks-giving to the God for the abundance of crops.

Singh said that he has been visiting Haridwar for the past 15 years.  “The ambience is spiritually evocative. However, the crime –rate being on the spiral shocks us all,” he added. Sushil Sehgal, a trader, said that the festival started  with the people taking  dip in the Ganga early in the morning at ‘Har ki Pauri’.
