Fake currency gangs shift focus to rural areas

Published on:

Changing their modus operandi, fake currency gangs started using women and children to circulate the fake currency notes. Members of the gangs, who target poor people from rural areas to materialise their nefarious plan, have also shifted their focus from cities to rural areas and towns.

According to Special Task Force (STF) sources, the fatal method has caught up fast in recent past. Apart from it, the gangs also replaced circulating fake currency notes in the denomination of Rs 500, and Rs 1,000 with those of in the denomination of Rs 50, and Rs 100 in rural areas as people usually don’t check these notes thoroughly during transaction.

“There is a reason behind using the women and children for circulating the fake currency. Usually, nobody suspects them. And when a woman or child give a note in the denomination of Rs 50 or Rs 100, people take it and put that into the pocket without checking it,” the source added. “Police movement is also comparatively very low in the rural areas. Taking

advantage of the situation, the members of the gangs materialise their plans. A woman or child, who circulates the fake currency, is given a limited amount of the fake currency to be circulated in the areas,” the STF source said. The gangs busted by the STF in the recent past, exposed involvement of the women who were involved in circulating the fake currency. Around six month ago, a woman was arrested by the STF. Fake currency notes in different denominations were recovered from her possession, the source said. The STF also arrested a woman with fake currency in November 2012. They were used as carrier, the source said.

The source said that the people should thorough check the currency notes in the denomination of Rs 100 and Rs 50 during transaction. “It is always better to check the currency note of any denomination thoroughly during transaction,” he advised, adding that it takes merely a few minutes. After receiving inputs about the new trends, the STF would pay special focus in the rural areas and small towns. It would also enhance its movement in the towns where the fatal method just started spreading its tentacles. STF sleuths would also make villagers aware about checking the notes.

STF SSP Senthil Akdai Krishanraj S confirmed receiving such inputs. “The women and children are being used by these gangs for circulating small amount. The main reason behind using them is that nobody suspects them. STF would ensure strict action against the persons whose involvement would figure out in circulating the fake currency,” the SSP said.

He said that the people thoroughly check the notes in the denomination of Rs 500 and Rs 1000. Similarly, they should check the notes in the lower denomination, including Rs 100 and Rs 50. Efforts would also be taken to make people aware about it.
