Experts gave tips on maintenance and operation of Cooperative Fuels Research (CFR) engines to nine senior executives of top refineries during two-week long training on ‘Operation and Maintenance of CFR engines’ by CSIR-IIP. The expert apprised them of different techniques meant for maintaining and operating CFR engines.
The executives from IOCl and HPCl participated in the training. Addressing the participants, director CSIR IIP MO Garg said, “Such a practical training is required to give a detailed insight about the engines. Detailed knowledge is need of the hour for smooth operation of the engine. It is smooth operation that gets accurate results.”
Participants were given practical training. Cetane number or CN was also discussed in an elaborate way during the training. CN is a measurement of the combustion quality of diesel fuel during compression ignition. It is a significant expression of the quality of a diesel fuel. A number of other measurements determine overall diesel fuel quality - these other measures of diesel fuel quality include density, lubricity, cold-flow properties, and sulfur content.
Another method that fuel-users control quality is by using the cetane index (CI), which is a calculated number based on the density and distillation range of the fuel. There are various versions of this, depending on whether you use metric or imperial units, and how many distillation points are used.
The employees of refineries working at quality control and research and design labs should participate in such training for ensuring efficient operation of the engines. Curriculum director Kalyan Singh said that event was organised in such a manner that it discussed practical as well as theoretical part of the planning, management, operation, maintenance, and checking of the engines. A demonstration in maintenance and operation was also given to the participants. Expert scientists of the institutes have been put in the training board.
