Considering the important roles played by environment and energy in the present context, it is vital that efficiency be facilitated in the consumption of energy and that the use of energy be minimised.

The Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP) director Dr MO Garg said this while speaking at the formal inauguration of the oil and gas conservation fortnight programme organised jointly by the institute and Petroleum Conservation Research Association (PCRA). Addressing the gathering, Garg stressed on the importance of oil and natural gas conservation along with the need for developing a market for energy efficiency in the nation. “We need to clearly understand the need of our country for energy efficiency. The stock of crude oil is limited but the consumption of this commodity is increasing considerably across the world which in turn is causing a rise in the price of crude oil,” he said.

Uttarakhand Technical Education under secretary SS Tolia said that India depends on coal, crude oil, natural gas and hydro power to meet its energy needs. About 160 million metric tonnes petroleum products were used in India in the financial year 2012-13. Petroleum use has increased about 60-folds in the past 60 years, he said. Meanwhile, various programmes were conducted in different schools of Dehradun as part of the oil and gas conservation fortnight being observed by ONGC. Different competitions were held for the students in these schools. literature related to energy saving techniques was distributed among students and teachers. There was active participation and many queries were raised by the students related to energy conservation.

The students also expressed their views indicating their awareness about preserving natural resources and eagerness to carry forward the message of oil and gas conservation during the competitions. All the programmes in OGCF-14 are being conducted under the guidance of RK Bahuguna, DGM (E), in-charge Corporate Energy Cell, Technical Services ONGC.
