Ex-CM raps Govt, seeks white paper on disaster

Published on:

After cornering the Congress-led State Government for its apathetic attitude towards the natural disaster-hit victims of the State, former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank demanded the State Government to issue white paper on the disaster. He lamented that the State Government has failed on all fronts during its regime in the State and also completely failed for not carrying relief and rehabilitation work in the disaster affected areas of the State.

While addressing the mediapersons in a press conference held at State party office in Dehradun on Saturday, Nishank said that that the State Government should issue white paper focusing the disaster at earliest.

“The State Government should also publicise that how financial assistance Uttarakhand received after the natural disaster and the percentage of total expenditure done by the State Government in the disaster affected districts of the State,” he demanded, adding that the Government should also draft the list of the Cabinet Ministers, who visited the disaster affected areas of the State.

After expressing his concern over the callous approach of the State Government for not taking effective steps for redressing the grievances of the displaced villagers, Dr Nishank said that the State Government is yet to draft the plans on rehabilitation work despite the fact the more than four months have passed since the natural disaster played catastrophe in the Garhwal and Kumaon divisions of Uttarakhand.

He also pleaded that the State Government should carry relief and rehabilitation work on the war footing with an aim to save the lives of the displaced villagers in the disaster affected districts of the State.

Nishank also alleged that those displaced villagers who somehow managed to save their lives by climbing to atop of the mountains or moved to safer places are now at the verge of starvation due to the acute shortage of food grains in the higher parts of the State.

Nishank also demanded from State Government to publicise the figures on rescued victims. After expressing his concern over the callous approach of the State Government for not introducing effective steps for rebuilding the damaged structure in the disaster affected areas of the State, Dr Nishank alleged villagers are facing the hardship in the absence of potable water, food grains, electricity, connecting routes and roads and proper medication.

After demanding from the Congress-led State Government to submit its resignation on the moral grounds, Nishank said that the bodies of the villagers and pilgrims are still lying unattended in the higher parts. He also expressed his antipathy over the series of cremation done by the government machinery in the Kedarnath campus and further alleged that the black listed company has been given assignment for carrying the cleanliness drive in the Kedarnath shrine. Nishank also cornered the State Government’s decision for privatisation in mining.

The large open flat near St Paul’s Church has a small park, flanked by the famous ‘Char Dukaan’, literally meaning four shops.  Most  local visitors to Char Dukaan are familiar with the staff of the cafeterias and  they are served even before they have placed their order.

Whether it is a sunny November morning or a cool June evening, a rain-laden day in July or a pleasant March afternoon, the area near St.Paul’s  is easily the most beautiful place to be at when one is in Mussoorie. At a height of 7,750 feet, this also remains the most secluded and beautiful area of the town, with spectacular views of the  snow clad Himalayas, dense deodar forests and peaceful slopes. landour is a fabulous place to visit though the only thing you can do over there is to take a long walk and have  a variety of snacks. The silent and a long, winding empty road inspires one to walk around the place.
