Dehradun Mayor Vinod Chamoli has questioned the logic behind the Chief Minister directing the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun to do its work efficiently when the State Government itself was hampering the efficiency of the corporation. Chamoli said the MCD was trying its best to execute its responsibilities efficiently and Chief Minister Harish Rawat should first ensure that the corporation was provided the staff and resources it needed to improve its work efficiency. It may be recalled that responding to a public complaint about water logging during a public hearing in Dehradun on Tuesday, Rawat had directed the Mukhya Nagar Adhikari to begin the cleaning of sewers within 24 hours.
He had added that he himself would clean the sewers if the MCD did not do so by Friday. Reacting to the CM’s statements the Mayor said on Wednesday, “We are already doing our task as best as we can with the resources we have. The CM should first answer as to why only one doctor is posted part time against the two posts of senior city health officers in the MCD. We have been seeking appointments to vacant posts and creation of addition posts in addition to badly needed resources to work properly but nothing has been done in this direction. Our solid waste management project is also stalled pending approval from the State administration. The Chief Minister’s job is not to clean the sewers himself but to facilitate the efficient system needed to ensure that this and other civic works are executed efficiently,” he said, while adding that the condition of urban local bodies in Uttarakhand had been deteriorating under the Congress-led State Government.
