A day after a 17-year-old female elephant and its three-year-old calf died of electrocution after getting entangled in a high tension electric wire, Rajaji Tiger Reserve authorities have registered a case against the engineer concerned under Wild life Act on Friday. The carcasses were buried in the forest at the behest of the park authorities following post mortem.

On Thursday night, the forest officials had come to know of the death of the elephants while they were patrolling in the forest area.

On seeing the bodies, the forest guards had informed the wildlife warden of Haridwar Range Komal Singh. It is the first case of electrocution reported from Haridwar forest range.

The range officer of Haridwar forest division D P Uniyal said, “The post mortem was carried out by panel of doctors comprising Dr Ashokk Kumar and Dr Raman Chopra.”

He further said that the height of the high tension wire crossing the forest area was a little low, something which resulted in the entanglement of the elephant and its infant.

Under the wildlife Act, a case has been registered against the engineer of Meerut Koteshwar link in connection with the deaths, he added.
