Eighteen-month-old child with critical head injury saved

The doctors of Kailash Hospital here claimed to have saved the life of an eighteen-month-old child who came with severe head injuries.

Addressing the media persons at the hospital on Monday, the neurosurgeon Dr Ankur Kapoor said that the child Gesar had been admitted at the hospital on September 3 after he had fallen from a height of around 20 feet while playing at home.

“The child was in a state of coma with no verbal activity and limited movement in limbs during the time of admission. He was immediately shifted to ICU and kept on ventilator. CT Scan of the head was done which revealed fracture of two bones on the left side with  intracranial haemorrhage inside ventricles,’’ he said.

Dr Kapur added that the brain matter had started coming out through the fracture on the left side and due to hypothermia, the child had developed further intracranial and intra-ventricular haemorrhage which raised intracranial pressure.

“After much deliberation, the child was taken up for the surgery on September 28 after which things gradually improved in him,” he said.

The paediatrician, Dr Rohit Srivastava, said that the vital centers of the brain had been affected as a result of trauma. “Because of this, the patient started passing more urine. Besides, as the child was kept on the ventilator for a considerably long time chest infection developed in him. Both of these problems were addressed appropriately, resulting in the improvement in his condition,” he said.

The doctors said that the child had taken time to come out of coma and after this, he had been taken out of the ventilator and then shifted to the ward.

“Currently, the child is conscious. He recognises his mother and other relatives. He was on complete oral diet and was discharged on November 21, thus ending his stay for two and half months,” Dr Srivastava said.
