The dysfunctional dialysis centre in the associated hospital of Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) proved fatal for a kidney patient, who died on Wednesday morning.
The patient, Shanti Prakash (49), a resident of Rudraprayag with severe kidney ailment was admitted in the hospital on August 5. The doctors treating him advised regular dialysis as both of his kidneys had failed and asked his family members to get prepared for transplant.
Two dialysis of the Shanti Prakash were done at the dialysis centre of the hospital. Meantime due to non functional Reverse Osmosis (RO) plant of the centre the dialysis in the centre had to be stopped from August 14. Unfortunately, it proved fatal for poor Shanti Prakash who died on wee hours of Wednesday.
It is learnt that he was brought to the dialysis centre on Tuesday late evening but in absence of facility he was shunted back to the ward. The relatives of the deceased took back the body to their native place in morning itself.
The nephrologist of the hospital, Dr Harish Basera confirmed that the patient was suffering from a severe kidney ailment. He said that the dialysis centre of the hospital has two operational machines but due to non availability of water from the RO machine no dialysis could be done in the centre from last three days.
It is learnt that the centre has three machines but one of them is out of order for last three months. This centre caters to the in house patients and three to four dialyses are normally done in a day here.
A cycle of dialysis on one patient requires about 130 liters of water which is made available by a RO machine installed in the centre. It was disclosed that the RO machine and its pump got non functional due to which dialysis had to be stopped.
When contacted on phone, the Principal of GDMC, Dr Pradeep Bharati Gupta told The Pioneer that he is out of station (New Delhi) and unaware about death of the patient. He said that the matter would be looked into.
