In view of the consistently dropping level of water in the Naini lake, Kumaon commissioner D Senthil Pandiyan chaired a meeting with senior citizens of Nainital seeking suggestions for conservation of the Naini lake. Stating that it is everyones moral duty to save the Naini lake, Pandiyan said that one should not dump any type of waste in the lake.
The Kumaon commissioner said that water is lifted from the Naini lake to supply water to the town and nearby areas. He directed the Jal Sansthan official to facilitate supply of water in Nainital and neighbouring areas according to a roster. Many people are getting buildings constructed without getting the building map passed by the lake Development Authority (lDA), despite which they are being provided water connection by Jal Sansthan. He directed the lDA secretary to conduct surprise inspections in the upper area of town and put a stop to illegal constructions. The official concerned was also told that no water connections should be approved till the summer time after adequate rainfall has been experienced. Jal Sansthan was directed to fix metre to all water connections in town from June 15 so that people are more careful towards the water quantity and deposit the correct amount of charges for the same. The level of water in Naini lake, the public requirement for water and possibility of rain should all be considered to facilitate supply of water in Nainital area, added Pandiyan.
