Drunk driving a big menace on Doon roads

Drunken driving is a major problem experienced on the roads of the State capital and elsewhere in Uttarakhand. The Dehradun regional transport office recently cancelled the driving licenses of 39 persons caught driving under the influence by the police. However, there are many persons who believe that driving after consuming alcohol is not harmful or dangerous.

A chemist shop owner wanting to remain anonymous said that he knows his alcohol tolerance limit and can drive back home safely after drinking liquor so there is no harm in doing so.

“The police generally do not stop and check vehicle users travelling with their family members and check mainly youngsters for drunken driving. Some people also drink and drive to boost their ego,” he opined.

A local businessman said that he knows the consequences of driving while drunk. He opined, “Some people get more alert and their concentration also improves after consuming liquor and they drive more safely after drinking. There is no harm in drinking and driving when I can reach home safely without causing harm to anyone else,” he added.

A youth who often drinks liquor said that he had to drink once after drinking inspite of knowing the rules and risks because his friends had forced him to drink the liquor and he had to return home. “My parents are unaware of my drinking habits and though I don’t often drink and drive, many do so after

succumbing to peer pressure,” said the youth.

Many of those who drink and drive do not consider it to be a major issue. But it is known that alcohol affects the depth perception and vital motor skills needed to drive safely.

According to observers, in order to curb this problem, the authorities need to step up the police drive against drunken driving especially on stretches of roads near tourist attractions in and around the State capital.
