The problem of shortage of potable water would surely become the hottest poll plank by mayoral candidates during local bodies elections as the shortage of potable water has already become a perennial problem in Nehru Colony and Karanpur wards of the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD).

The BJP has fielded the present mayor, resident of Nehru colony (Ward Number-33) Vinod Chamoli whereas Congress vice-president, Suryakant Dhasmana, resident of Karanpur (Ward Number-11) is the main rival for mayoral post besides, BSP and the only eunuch mayoral candidate from Chukhu Mohalla (Ward Number-13), Rajni Rawat is also in the fray residents too face the shortage of potable water.

Even after introducing couple of measures for overcoming the problem of shortage of potable water by the department, the problem still exists in the several localities in the Capital city. The shortage of potable water turns deteriorate with the rising of temperature and those who are living in the remote areas are forced to traverse several km to quench their thirst.

With the declaration of the names of mayoral posts for three municipal corporations each in both Garhwal and Kumaon divisions of Uttarakhand, the contenders are leaving no chance to woo voters. Besides, potable water problem, sanitation, repairing of roads and potholes, health facilities are among the main problems which are included in the manifesto by the contenders for emerging victorious in the current local bodies election.

Even though the Opposition party in Vidhan Sabha — BJP claimed that the most deserving candidates are fielded by the party, who are considered fit in the selection committee frame constituted by the party, but the rivals could create problem as the Congress enjoys majority in the State.

Besides, the election for mayoral post of MCD has also become triangular especially after the only eunuch candidate from BSP; Rajni Rawat has filed her nomination. Interestingly, she stood first in terms of filing the nomination paper for the mayoral posts as BJP and Congress candidates had filed their nomination papers  just a couple of hours before closing time for nomination.

It is also pertinent to mention here is that out of 14 candidates who are contesting for mayoral post, six are independent candidates.

Besides, the Parliamentary Board (Election Committee) of the BJP also claimed that the veteran leaders had managed to convince different fractions of the party, who were claiming for the same post.
