With the help of the Indian Meteorological Department, the State government is going to establish a Doppler radar, an early weather warning system, on 750 square metres area without trees, situated at an altitude of 2753 metres near Surkanda Devi temple area in Tehri district.

Additional Chief Secretary and high powered committee head Rakesh Sharma said that this decision has been taken by the high powered committee of World Bank financed Uttarakhand Disaster Recovery Project of Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority on Tuesday. The basic purpose of putting in place early weather warning system is to make the people alert in advance so that at least lives can be saved  and necessary preventive measures can be taken to deal with any eventuality.

The department of Disaster Management will provide land to the Indian Meteorological Department for installing the Doppler radar. The IMD will use this land for installing C Band Doppler radar to disseminate weather forecast.

Observers say that the demand for having a state of the art early weather warning system was being raised for the last many years for a State like Uttarakhand due to its sensitiveness to natural calamities with such disasters being witnessed over the years in one part or the other of the State.
