Doon varsity agitation finds SFI support

The Student’s Federation of India (SFI) has extended its support to the ongoing student agitation at Doon University. A meeting of student organisation was held at the university campus on Wednesday. Speaking on the occasion the State general Secretary of SFI, DS Rawal said that the Vice Chancellor (VC) of the university has infringed upon the rights of the students. He said that it is a pity that the VC on one hand talks of developing the university on the lines of JNU and on other hand is engaged in curtailing the rights of the students.

SFI leader Vipin Joshi said that the tenure of present VC is embroiled in controversies since inception. He alleged that many faculty members of the university are appointed in gross violation of norms. He said that the SFI would start a massive agitation if the university fails to take back its draconian rules issued recently.

The students of the university are protesting against the university academic councils recent decision to impose curbs on some activities of the students. The new prospectus of the university mentions these guidelines. It mentions ‘Doon University Students’ Discipline and Conduct Rules’, which states, “Acts of violence and all forms of coercion such as gheraos, sit-ins, calling media or students/office bearers of other institutions/organisations in the campus or any other act which disrupts the normal academic and administrative functioning of the university and/or any act which encourages, abets or leads to disorder and violence on campus could invite punishment’. The new rule imposes a ban on any protest by the students in the campus.

More than 1,300 students are enrolled in various courses of the university.  These students are vehemently opposing the new rules
