In coordination with the district administration and municipal corporation officials, several works like removing roadside encroachments and developing parking space among others will be done to improve traffic system in the provisional state capital, Dehradun, deputy superintendent of police (Traffic) Jaya Baloni said, while talking to The Pioneer on Sunday.
Baloni said that following the direction of senior police officers, several measures will be taken to improve traffic system in the state capital and tourist destinations. As large numbers of tourists are expected to reach Dehradun soon, the traffic plan will be drafted in such a way that local commuters and tourists are not inconvenienced due to traffic jams, she said, adding that city patrol unit personnel will be pressed into service in those places where traffic jams are being reported daily.
In the state capital, it is being found that the cart vendors selling vegetables, fruits, ice creams and others encroach roads, resulting in traffic jams. After seeking permission from the senior police officers and in perfect coordination with the district administration and municipal corporation officials, anti-encroachment drives will be launched from time to time in the city, Baloni said.
The traffic police officers have been directed to ensure that vehicles are not parked at no-parking areas. Those found parked at no-parking areas would be lifted with cranes, she warned. “I will be visible on the roads, monitoring the traffic system from time to time,” she added.
The traffic sub-inspectors have been directed to inspect authorized parking venues and to ensure arrangements for proper security and street lighting
She said that busy roads will be identified and on the direction of senior police officers, a special team would be pressed into service to ensure smooth flow of traffic on the roads.
As per the direction given to the police station officers and police post officers, they will manage traffic during the peak hours. “We will review things regarding the reasons for traffic jams in the city during the meetings with the traffic police officers and personnel and based on the inputs to be received, some concrete steps will be taken to improve the traffic system in the city,” she said.
After establishing coordination with school authorities, the closing hours of the schools will be changed as per requirements and alternate routes would be developed for the students and their parents, she said.
Alternative routes will be developed for tourists reaching mussoorie like Jharipani, Hathipav, she said, adding the police personnel deputed on traffic duty will be briefed from time to time and their work will be monitored effectively.
Rash driving, drunk driving, riding bikes sans helmetS, the norms being taken lightly by the drivers are reasons among others which are leading to the spiraling number of road mishaps, taking toll of human lives in the district, she said.
She said she would lay emphasis on launching awareness campaign among students and youths in schools, colleges, universities, industrial units and other places over the need of abiding by the traffic rules and road safety norms from time to time.
Traffic Police personnel have been directed to act under Motor Vehicle (MV) Act regarding triple riding, over-speeding, rash driving, drunk driving and other traffic violations, she said, adding that those policemen who would work exceptionally good will be awarded while those found negligent on their assigned duties will be taken to task, she added.
