Doon sees 3 accidents in 24 hrs

Despite the police conducting drives and slapping the errant commuters with penalties, the accident spree is continuing in Dehradun. Three accidents have occurred in Dehradun over the past 24 hours.

Taking a serious note of the alarming spike in accidents, SP Traffic DS Gunjyal asked the traffic police to intensify checking drives at places around the schools along with other accident prone places and strictly slap penalties on those found flouting the traffic rules. Earlier, police had directed the school managements to ensure that the school vans are not overloaded.

However, the direct has not been acted upon to the desired extent. Notices sent by police to the negligent school authorities have not borne any fruit.

Meanwhile, police while conducting vehicle checking drives at nine places in Patelnagar area  seized 17 vehicles following which   challans were slapped on them  under motor vehicle act on Monday.

A police officer said that aside from the mechanical snags in the cars facing the accidents, faulty road engineering, drivers’ negligence, drunk driving, overloading and rash driving  are triggering  road accidents. “We are doing our best. Yet, such accidents are occurring. We are indeed a worried lot,” he added.

Observers opine that police throwing up its hands in despair would further compound things on the roads. “They must be more and more  efficient and strict while doing duties on the roads,” says one of the observers.
