Ever since Dehradun was made the State capital, the authorities have neglected the need for developing open green spaces for the general public to indulge in healthy and leisure activities like walks and games with family and friends.
Though Doon was once known for its greenery and peace, the consistent rise in population and construction has deteriorated the environment with the result that it has become harder for city dwellers to enjoy the clean air and greenery which the city was once famous for.
At present, the Gandhi Park is thought to be the only park of its kind open to the public in the heart of the town.
However, while many citizens continue to visit the Gandhi Park for walks and relaxation, not many know that the army authorities have developed a six kilometre stretch in the Garhi cantonment area into a walking plaza for the general public.
In the 1990s, the Army authorities in Dehradun decided to provide an avenue for those looking to spend time in healthful activities amidst green and comparatively peaceful surroundings. With traffic congestion, noise and air pollution becoming a regular feature of localities around Chakrata Road, Tilak Road and Khurbura, the walking plaza in the cantonment comes as a relief for the citizens.
This feature comprises pathways for pedestrians through green spaces and a playground along the 6 km stretch of road from the Doon School to Raj Bhawan.
The path traverses through various areas in the cantonment which is favourable for walks and relaxation due to the greenery and comparatively lesser traffic compared to most city roads. At present this feature is used mostly by those living along Chakrata Road, Rajendra Nagar and Tilak Road among other areas. However, a greater number of people would avail of this feature had they been aware of it.
There are lush green parks en route with benches for people to sit and chat and since only army vehicles are allowed to use parts of the road, there is little traffic to disturb the public. There is also a large play ground adjoining Dakra and the Military Hospital. This ground is in regular use for cricket and football matches.
At a time when the Parade Ground and Gandhi Park are becoming more congested due to improperly parked vehicles and lack of proper maintenance, this walking plaza in the Garhi cantonment offers an avenue to the people looking for peaceful and green surroundings for walks or leisure time.
