Rain on the weekend in Dehradun once again exposed the failure of the authorities to redress civic problems like waterlogging and improper civic sanitation in the State capital.
The pothole ridden road in the Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT) in Dehradun appears like a pond due to rain water accumulating here and other sites within the ISBT compound. The company operating the terminal along with the Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority is responsible for maintaining the ISBT but so far a proper drainage system has not been facilitated for this important facility.
Various officials have inspected the terminal and issued instructed on various occasions in the past few years but nothing concrete has been done yet to redress the waterlogging problem that is faced here every year during the rainy season.local resident Neeraj Pandey, who often visits the ISBT said that waterlogging and damaged condition of the road pose problems for all those arriving at the ISBT.
The accumulated rainwater is often splashed by the vehicles on the clothes of passersby and bystanders.A student luv Vadhwa said that waterlogging after rainfall makes it tough for people to walk without entering dirty water that is more than ankle deep. Sanitation facilities are also improper at the terminal where the toilets are in a bad condition.
A traveler Narendra Singh Negi said that the ISBT has been suffering from water logging during the rainy season for many years now but the authorities have remained apathetic towards the need for resolving this problem. Those arriving in Dehradun from other States and cities are greeted by a sight of official apathy and disorder at the ISBT, he added.
Apart from the ISBT, waterlogging is a problem faced in various parts of the State capital where the roads become submerged in rainwater apart from which rain water also enters homes and shops.According to officials lack of timely cleaning of drains, unplanned constructions, encroachments and lack of a storm water drainage system to meet the requirements of Dehradun are among the major factors responsible for the varied civic woes faced during the rainy season here.
