Doon hospital's dept suffers due to lack of radiologists

Published on:

The radiology department of the associated hospital of Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) is in dire strait as only one radiologist has remained here after recent transfer of doctors and resignation by one of a Senior Residents (SR). The lone remaining radiologist Dr G S Joshi got so much disturbed by the high workload at his disposal that on Friday he too decided to resign. An alarmed hospital management persuaded him to take back his resignation after which the radiologist reluctantly agreed to work. Incidentally Dr Joshi is a former Director General (DG) of state health services and is working on contract after his retirement.  Workload on shoulders of Dr Joshi increased recently when senior radiologist Dr Yatindra Singh was transferred to Boradi hospital Tehri. To make matters worse SR Vichi Khanna also decided to put her papers. It resulted in a situation where the entire workload of the department fell on Dr Joshi.

The radiology department of the hospital has facilities like Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computer assisted Tomography (CT) scan, X rays, Digital X ray, Ultra sound, Mammography and bone densitometer. Hundreds of patients visit the hospital which incidentally is the biggest government hospital of the state.

The department data suggests that the radiology department of the hospital does about 200 X rays, 120-150 Ultra Sounds, 45 CT scans and 15 to 20 MRI daily Incidentally Dr Yatindra Singh who has been transferred is considered an expert in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and departmental sources reveal that there is no radiologist in the department which can handle MRI machine.

When contacted the Principal of the GDMC Dr Pradip Bharati Gupta said that a request has been made to the state administration to let Dr Yatindra Singh work in the hospital till his replacement is found. A similar request is made for Dr Narendra Singh Tomar, Dr Pankaj Sharma, Dr Abhilasha Kohli (anaesthetists) and Dr Harish Basera (nephrologist), he said.
