Doon green suburbs turn into noisy dumps

Published on:

Though the district administration and Dehradun police have achieved some success in curtailing noise pollution generated at wedding points and religious events after 10 pm, this change has largely remained restricted to the city whereas the events in suburban areas continue to generate noise late into the night.

The district administration and police have held talks with wedding point managers and local DJs on the issue but the authorities have ignored the fact that many events, especially in the suburbs are not held in wedding points but on public or private space where temporary structures are erected for parties which are held late into the night.

The total lack of proper waste disposal facility and irresponsible dumping of garbage in the open by citizens is another aspect which the authorities have continued to ignore. Due to this, the once clean and green suburbs of Dehradun are turning into open air dumps.

One such suburban area is Badripur which falls under the Nehru Colony police station. locals here complain that parties and religious events are held frequently generating noise pollution well past 10 pm. Though the Jogiwala and Defence Colony police posts are not far from the area, the police seldom take action on their own.

Such events are held in homes or on vacant plots covered with temporary shelters. It is alleged that involvement of influential persons in religious events prevents the police from withholding the law.

Similar is the situation in Balawala and many other suburban localities where the authorities continue to turn a blind eye to late night noise pollution and dumping of waste in the open on public land. The suburbs of Dehradun once contained farms producing various crops but with constructions mushrooming in the past years, the authorities have not been able to ensure proper civic facilitation and implementation of regulations in such areas.

It remains to be seen whether the authorities remain apathetic or direct the necessary action.
