Doon civic body to review Sunday market timing move

The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun will soon ask for a meeting with the district magistrate and senior superintendent of police to discuss issues of the Sunday market, said town commissioner Nitin Singh Bhadauriya.

It may be recalled that recently after assuming charge as the SSP of Dehradun, Sadanand Date had directed that the Sunday market should be held only from 6 am to 10 am in order to resolve the traffic congestion and disorder caused by it being held till past the afternoon. However, if implemented this decision could affect the revenue earned by the MCD from the Sunday market. The MCD charges `300 from each Sunday market stall owner for the day. More than 600 stalls are set in the Sunday market for which about four months ago the MCD had raised the charge per-stall from `100 to `300. However, the stall owners are unlikely to pay the same amount if they are allowed to ply their trade only for four hours. Sources state that this decision is being reconsidered by the police.

Talking to The Pioneer, the Dehradun town commissioner Nitin Singh Bhadauriya said that the corporation will soon call for a meet to be chaired over by the DM and SSP so that this and other related issues can be resolved. It should be noted here that the MCD board had, in its recent, meeting also called for steps to limit expansion of the Sunday market to other nearby roads due to the traffic congestion and disorder being caused by it.
