DM gives directions for demolishing condemned buildings

As the monsoon has arrived in most parts of the State, the Dehradun district magistrate C Ravishankar has stated that strict directions have been given to the officials for evicting occupants and demolishing condemned buildings in the city so that no big accidents can happen during heavy rainfall.

Talking to The Pioneer he said, “As the monsoon has already arrived in many parts of the state, it is not possible that many condemned building will be demolished in this season itself.

However, we have given strict instructions to officials that the buildings which are in a very ruinous condition should be demolished and people, if living in any such building should also get shifted to any other place on time.’’

Adding more about the plan he said, “As per the directions issued, the officials will be identifying the buildings again and a report will be prepared. Further steps will be taken accordingly.  It is pertinent to mention here that there are nearly 32 buildings in the city that are marked by the MCD as condemned buildings in the past records. However, even after identification of the buildings years ago, no concrete action has been taken so far by the authorities concerned.

The Dehradun municipal commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey said, “We have given directions to the engineers of the MCD for the task. They will be checking and will be revising the existing data on the condemned buildings.

Many buildings have also been listed as condemned by the owners wanting to get rid of the tenants or because the property is disputed.

We have given a time of about two weeks after which a report will be submitted to us by the engineers. Further steps for eviction and demolition will be taken accordingly after the submission of the report.”
