Tehri district administration facilitated a meeting of the Dalit families with the upper caste people following which about 30 Dalit people from village Gangi in Tehri district, who had been allegedly forced to leave their homes under threat from some upper caste people, have agreed to return to Ghansali on Saturday. The meeting was attended among others by DM, SSP, SDM, DSP and Tehsildar. It is learnt that the upper caste people, responsible for their exit from the village, have tendered an apology in writing in the presence of the gram pradhan and assured that the Dalits would have no problem in living in the village.
Notably, a spat between an elderly woman and a Dalit youth over beating of drum on the occasion of a wedding had erupted into a nasty flare-up between the Dalit community and the upper caste people, forcing the former to flee.
Tehri police have registered case after they received complaints from both the parties, said Tehri SP Vimla Gunjyal. She further said that a police team comprising circle officer and investigating officer of the case have been deployed at Gangi village and team members have reached Ghansali on Friday.
