Dismal level of education in State, NAS survey reveals

Published on:

Perturbed by the decreasing quality of education in the Government schools of Uttarakhand as reflected by various surveys, the State Government has restructured the task assigned to the Block and cluster resource coordinators. In a letter directed to all district education officers (DEO), Principals of District Institutes Education Training (DIET) and district project officers Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) the Director General (DG) of School education D Senthil Pandiyan has said that the National Achievement Survey (NAS) and State level Achievement Survey reports have revealed dismal state of teaching quality in Uttarakhand. In the letter the DG has tersely told the education officers that the surveys reflect poorly on academic assistance and monitoring system of education in the State.

The DG has ordered that senior officers should more frequently visit the school and keep a close watch on quality of teaching. The CRC and BRC would have to report their activities regularly to deputy education officers. The reporting officers would recommend for clearing the salaries of BRC and CRC after assessing their reports.

The Pioneer had reported in its addition of January 20 that the state government is planning to restructure the activities of the BRC and CRC in the state to ensure that they are involved more in the academic activities. The education department seems to have taken cognizance of a recent report of Joint review committee of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA).

The committee had recommended that more than 1200 CRC and BRC of state should be handed more academic works in the schools. The CRC and BRC are the basic positions of the education department who are assigned the tasks of providing education and other support to teachers apart from monitoring their activities. It is pertinent to mention here that the teachers who are resourceful and have proper connections manage to get them posted at these pivotal positions which involve less or no academic assignments.
