The recent disaster in Uttarakhand has affected the Independence Day celebrations in the city. Many schools have decided to keep it a sober affair without pomp and show.
“We are celebrating Independence Day in a sober manner. Not only Independence Day but all our major school functions including our Annual Day will be low key affairs. We have contributed a major amount of the school’s savings to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund as an attempt to help the victims of the Kedarnath tragedy. There will be a speech by the chairman followed by flag hoisting and patriotic songs sung by the students,” said Sanskar International school principal PK Rai.
Government schools like Government Girls Inter-College, Rajpur Road will also celebrate Independence Day in a somber manner due to the recent disaster in Uttarakhand. “Due to the Kedarnath tragedy, the celebrations will be quite sober. We will have a flag hoisting ceremony and patriotic songs sung by the students,” said school principal, Mohini Thapliyal.
The other schools such as Summer Valley School and Scholar’s Home will also be celebrating it in a restrained manner. “We are hosting a simple Independence Day ceremony which includes flag hoisting, march past by Class XII students and patriotic songs which will be sung by the school students. We will also be inducting the student council on this occasion,” said Scholar’s Home principal, Chayya Khanna.
It should be mentioned here that the District administration had issued a notice directing the schools and other educational institutions to commemorate Independence Day in a low key manner.
