The student union of the DAV PG College here has raised a demand to disassociate the college from the HN Bahuguna Garhwal University (HNBGU).
The students are of the view that by change of the university the college would be able to give admission to more students. The HNBGU is a central university and to disassociate itself the college would have to first de-affiliate itself from it which is difficult as it would require amendment in The University act. A delegation of the students union led by its President Rahul Kumar met the union Human Resource Development (HRD) minister Prakash Javadekar during his Dehradun visit on Tuesday and put forwarded their demand. The delegation requested the minister that the necessary amendment in the University act should be brought soon. Former President of the student’s union Rakesh Negi said that under the central university the college can take only 12500 admissions in I year due to which large number students are left out. These students have to shell out extra money for admissions in private colleges or for admissions in evening classes of the university which are under self finance scheme. Interestingly the college Principals of government degree colleges of Garhwal region had also requested the state government to de-affiliate them from the HNBGU last year. These Principals wanted the de affiliation as the colleges have to submit the affiliation fees every year to the central university. Another reason was that these colleges run evening classes for the students under the orders of the government which were affiliated by the Sri Dev Suman University. The running of similar courses by two different universities in a single campus was objected upon by many academicians.
