Digging of city roads for various tasks without keeping the local police in the loop continues to cause major inconveniences to the people in the State capital aside from spawning accidents. SSP Dr Sadanand Date had earlier directed the construction agencies to inform the police when they start such work on roads and by what time such work would be completed. However, construction agencies do not bother to follow the order.
Things are such that stretches of roads have been found dug due to ongoing construction works near the State Assembly at a time when the session is on. The people visiting the Assembly are being inconvenienced.
Several places in the state capital like Majra, ISBT, Kanwali Road, GMS Road, Kamla Palace, Ballupur Road, Chakrata Road, IMA Blood Bank Road, Sahastradhara Crossing and Raipur police station are being dug by the construction agencies in the name of sewerage, laying water pipelines and widening of roads.
The suffering people say they have no inkling of knowledge when the works are completed and the dug parts of the roads are restored. Even the policemen who keep being deputed there for around 12 hours a day say they are developing breathing problems.
Recently, some stretches of Kanwali Road along with some others have been dug. Police as usual have not been informed.
Placed thus, police face difficulty to draft traffic plans facilitating smooth flow of traffic for the commuters. What is more, road accidents are occurring every other
day with the stretches remaining dug.
After assuming charge, Dehradun SSP Sadanand Date had directed the construction agencies, including the State government departments like Payjal, power and others, to inform the police station concerned about the works involving roads in black and white.
“They must inform police about the time-frame of the repair and other works so that we learn when the craters are filled,” he had said.
SSP Date had said that this was a grave issue. He had warned that action under appropriate sections of IPC would be lodged against the errant institution or the agency at the police station concerned if life was lost or government property was damaged due to the dug- up stretches of the roads. However, nothing tangible has happened so far to the woe of the people.
