DGP Ganapathy: CPU will chase chain-snatchers

Published on:

State DGP MA Ganapathy has issued order to the district police to depute City Patrol Units to stop chain snatching and other crimes in the assigned areas.

The senior cops are worried over spiraling crimes like chain snatching, especially in the cities like Haridwar and Dehradun. The State top cop said that the CPU might prove effective in controlling street crimes and those committed on the women and children.

Garhwal Range IG Sanjay Kumar Gunjyal said that district police heads have been directed to ensure that CPU personnel would conduct video recording from the spots of the conversation between the alleged traffic violators and the policemen.

Things should be clear as to the violation of traffic rules by the accused. Thereafter, challans would be slapped on the traffic violators. The CPU personnel would not be allowed to edit the videos. District police chiefs would take action against CPU personnel if they are caught editing the video recording.

Notably, CPU was formed in Dehradun in April, 2014. Same units came up later in Haridwar and Haldwani as the works of the unit in stopping traffic rule violations won accolades from several quarters.

Observer opined that it is good that DGP has finally taken decision of deploying the CPU for chasing the criminals who escape after committing crimes. Earlier, it was seen that the CUP personnel were focused on slapping challans in those areas which are relatively free from traffic jams and accidents.

This spawned anger against the unit. They remained indifferent when incidents like chain snatching happened. The same was the story with overspending, causing accidents.

However, there is little doubt that CPU is discernible in Dehradun city curbing the previous trend of the people flouting traffic rules with impunity. Those driving two-wheelers are being seen with helmets on-a sight which was rare previously.

“Doubtless, it has controlled to some extent the people who used to flout traffic rules with impunity previously,” said Samir, resident of Rajpur Road.
