In an effort to cure ailing emergency ward of the associated hospital of Government Doon Medical College (DGMC), the medical education department has decided to increase number of beds and setup an emergency control room. The department has decided to triple the number of beds in the emergency ward of the hospital from nine to 27 beds.
The Director Medical education, Dr Ashutosh Sayana said that an emergency control room would be set up in the hospital so that cases of mass casualty and routine work of the emergency are handled in a better manner. The department has also decided to increase the number of Emergency Medical Officers (EMO) in the emergency wing of the hospital. For this two doctors of Provincial Medical Services (PMS) would be posted as EMO. The senior Matron of the hospital is directed to depute two staff nurses in all three shifts in the emergency. Dr Sayana said that necessary staff would be made available to the hospital to ensure round the clock functioning of pathology, ECG and X ray. Emphasising on security of staff, the department has decided to hire 30 security guards from Uttarakhand Purva sainik kalyan Nigam limited (UPNl) and enforce gate pass system in female wing of the hospital. The hospital administration has also been directed to ensure that leaves of doctors are sanctioned only when their replacements are put in place. The department has also emphasized the need of having proper cleanliness in the emergency wing.
It is clear that the medical education department has started taking corrective measures after the flak the hospital authorities when the Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat made a surprise visit to the hospital on May 31. The CM was specially annoyed by the pathetic conditions in the emergency ward of the hospital. Two Junior Residents and one staff nurse were suspended by CM. The JRs were found absent from their duties while the attendants of a patient complained about laxity of the staff nurse.
