'Devotees responsible for polluting Ganga'

Published on:

Devotees are principally responsible for the pollution of Ganga, said national convener of the Namami Gange, Trivendra Singh Rawat.  He met the committee members and discussed various issues regarding the Kanwar Mela slated to begin on August 1.

Notably, BJP-led Central Government is stressing a great deal on Clean Ganga Mission. Accordingly, a separate department under Uma Bharti, Union Minister of Water Resources, has been constituted. National Clean Ganga Mission (NMCG) is meant to free Ganga from pollution to ensure its natural flow.  Rs20,000 crore have been released by the Centre for the implementation  of this project.

While interacting with the media persons, Trivendra SIngh Rawat said that BJP’s  national president Amit Saha had constituted Namami Gange Clean Committee that involves five States through which Ganga flows.  Small groups formed by the local villagers would be in the van of the movement, according to the plan conceived by Shah, Rawat said.

He said the devotees are wrecking the river being prodded by  priests and soothsayers.  “I would soon sit with the priests of the villages flanked by Ganga. I would ask them to desist from anything that would desecrate Ganga with pollutants,” he said.  Regarding the strategy of Clean Committee to the upcoming Kanwar Mela, he said that committee has  prepared pamphlets and handbills to be distributed among the Kanwaris. “We would try to make them pledge on entering the city that they would desist from polluting the holy river in any way,” Rawat said.

He further said that the drive of planting saplings  near the Ganga ghats will be started next month to maintain the ecological system of the surrounding areas.
