A demonstration of the ultra modern robotic surgery was held at the campus of the associated hospital of the Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) on Wednesday.
The State of the art equipment was displayed in the hospital for the surgeons and other doctors of the hospital to have a feel of the latest technology. Praising the machine, the Medical Superintendent (MS) of the hospital, Dr K K Tamta who himself is a specialist surgeon, said that the machine is very advanced and it drastically reduces the time of surgical procedure and duration of post operative stay of the patient in the hospital. “The robotic surgery equipment is very advanced and beneficial for patients and surgeons. The hospital would recommend the state administration to purchase the system for the medical college,’’ he said.
Senior surgeon of the hospital, Dr Vipul Kandwal said that robotic surgery is minimally invasive and for surgeries of colon, oesophagus, uterus, thyroid cancers this process is the best. He informed that the with this type of surgery the patient is able to go home faster and resume normal life much earlier. Both the patient and surgeon would be benefited from this newly devised technology, he added.
The Da Vinci robotic system manufactured by a US company holds monopoly in robotic surgery machine. The Manager Customer and sales training, Satish R Kulkarni said that the system costs approximately Rs 13 crore. He said that the AIIMS New Delhi and PGI Chandigarh have this machine but no hospital in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand have this equipment. Kulkarni said that the objective of the display was to create awareness about the ultramodern system.
He informed that the company provides training to surgeons operate the system.
