Sitting up over the issue of a college student from Chakrata Nitesh Joshi dying and being cremated with his relatives being kept in the dark, Dehradun SSP Sadanand Date has sought an explanation from the in-charges of police stations Kotwali, Premnagar and Raipur.
Things followed after SP City had remarked in his investigation report that negligence on the part of the above-mentioned police station in-charges had brought bad name on police.
Sources said that guilty police officers of above police stations would be punished in the form of adverse entries in their Confidential Report (CR).
Sources said that a student of DAV (PG) College, Joshi was admitted in Doon Hospital in a critical condition from Premnagar and died three days later. Police conducted postmortem but they did not advertise about the unclaimed body for public notice before taking it for cremation.
Earlier, demanding CBI inquiry into mysterious death, scores of students and Chakrata residents protested at SSP office and submitted a memorandum addressed to the Governor recently. They protesters are reported to have met the Governor and demanded high level inquiry into the matter.
SSP Date said that as per preliminary report, the policemen of the above police stations had acted wrongly on the matter. Prior to cremation, they should have advertised the body, seeking information, he said.
Relatives and friends of the deceased said that Joshi had died at Doon Hospital on March 11 due to medical negligence and his body was cremated in haste the following day without the administration and police trying to find out the relatives of the deceased.
“It is unfortunate that the body remained unidentified during the cremation. This, despite the fact that we lodged a missing diary at the Raipur police station on March 12. We came to learn that Nitesh was admitted at Doon Hospital as late as on April 2. We still do not know a thing about how he died,” the deceased’s uncle said.
