The Dehradun city bus federation has blamed the police officials of the state capital for distorting the directives of Supreme Court (SC) for imposing penalties on the city buses. In a letter directed to the Transport commissioner, the president of the federation, Vijay Vardhan Dandaryial has said that police are not empowered to impose penalties on the city buses. He said that the federation had filed an application under the Right To Information Act in the office of SSP of Dehradun in which it had questioned as to under which notification, state government regulation, MV act the police is slapping penalties on the city buses. Dandariyal said that the police have provided an order of Supreme Court (SC) in which it is clearly mentioned that carrying overload in goods would invite penalty. He blamed the police for distorting the order which is about overloading of goods on the city buses for overloading of passengers. The President of federation further added that the police refer provisions under section 206 and 207 of Motor Vehicle (MV) act for justifying the action of imposing penalties but the fact remains that the sate government in its notification dated July 15, 2009 had delegated this power on transport department. He said that the police are exceeding its authority in slapping penalties. Dandariyal alleged that the RTO officials are aware of the fact that the police officers are not eligible to slap these penalties but they prefer to look other way.
