Defeat of BJP in UP sign of public disenchantment, says UPCC chief

The defeat of the Bharatiya Janata Party in the Gorakhpur and Phulpur lok Sabha bypolls is a sign of the public disenchantment with the BJP Government. The results of the UP bypolls and other polls in various States show that the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) will be elected to form Government at the Centre in 2019, said Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress Committee president Pritam Singh. He stressed that the bypoll results will also exert an effect on the political scenario in Uttarakhand.

Referring to the bypoll results the PCC chief said, “The bypoll results not only in Uttar Pradesh but also in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh clearly show what the people think about the performance of the BJP Government. During the 2014 elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had made various promises to the people. He had promised to bring back black money stashed overseas, to facilitate major employment generation, all round development and strengthening national security,” he said.

“We have seen since then that the black money stashed overseas has not been brought back. The youth continue to struggle with unemployment while the national defence strategy is such that China has continued to increase its dominance not only at Doklam along the international border with India but is also strengthening its presence in our neighbouring countries including Nepal, Sri lanka and Maldives. The BJP Government has also failed to effectively tackle terrorism. The people have become disillusioned with the BJP due to the consistent contradictions in what was earlier promised and what is being delivered,” he added.

Referring to the BJP Government in Uttarakhand, Singh added, “The State Government has completed about one year in office. Since its formation, this State Government has done little more than stall various developmental works in the state. The condition of farmers has remained dire with even farmers committing suicide in the state for the first time. Under such circumstances, the state Government has remained insensitive with the CM commenting about suicides becoming a ‘fashion’.”

The PCC chief stressed that the bypoll results will have a definite impact also on the political scenario in Uttarakhand.
