The Nainital district and sessions judge Meena Tiwari has sentenced Deepak Arya to death for the rape and murder of an 8-year old girl in 2012. The police claim to have nabbed Arya using forensic science in what was initially a ‘blind case’. The family of the victim has welcomed the decision of the court.
The eight-year-old daughter of a Bindukhatta resident had been kidnapped from outside her home on the night of July 10, 2012. Her body was discovered the next day and post-mortem examination had revealed that she was first raped and then killed and her dead body raped again. This incident had sparked off public outrage in the region which had increased the pressure on the police to solve the case. The police questioned several people around the residence of the victim, but could not secure any leads. The DNA samples of more than four dozen persons were sent for analysis to Delhi, but the reports came out negative which in turn had further increased the pressure on the police. The police then sent the DNA samples of two suspects to Delhi for examination. The DNA sample of one Deepak Arya, an uncle of the victim, came out positive. He was arrested from his home and after being interrogated by the police, he confessed to his crime. He had said that he had committed the crime while being under the influence of liquor. The police booked him under sections 376, 302 and 201 of IPC. Arya was found guilty by the district and sessions judge Meena Tiwari who sentenced him to death.
