With the campaign for the students’ union election in the DAV (PG) College slated for August 31 generating heat, two students’ groups scuffled on Thursday, prompting the police to be extra cautious.
After the scuffle was reported SSP Nivedita Kukreti called a meeting with the college staff and the representatives of the students’ groups on Friday on the college campus. College chief election officer DS Tyagi said that they would meet the SSP on Friday after which a meeting with police administration and students’ groups would be held. He further said that the scuffle involving Aryan and Satyam groups was a minor one and things were controlled in no time with the intervention of the college’s chief proctor and other college staffers.
As members of Satyam Group and Aryan Group rallying around the college campus verbal arguments ensued. Police deployed at the campus and the college staffers rushed to the site to control the situation. The excited students of the rival groups involved themselves in heated arguments with the police too.
An Aryan Group leader Sachin Thapliyal said that while they were peacefully canvassing in the campus some Satyam Group activists had made objectionable comment, leading to the scuffle.
Since the morning, the college campus was abuzz with activities with the members of the rival groups going all-out to win the support of the students.
Dalanwala police station officer YS Singh said that the police are alert to maintain peace in the college. “Police forces have been deployed in the college campus while a temporary police post has been set up. One sub-inspector and four constables aside from a platoon of Provincial Armed Constabulary have been deputed. Besides, the police are patrolling the college campus. No one will be allowed to take law in his hands,” he added.
