Students’ politics is proving so decisive that the principals of DAV (PG) College and DBS (PG) College are not sure whether their respective
colleges will reopen and if admission process will resume this week or next week. To pressurise the college administration to meet their demands, the students led by leaders of different students’ groups continued their protests separately in the campuses of DAV (PG) College and DBS (PG) College on Monday.
To avoid untoward incidents, district administration deployed heavy police force in these colleges. To procure admission form, transfer certificate or other related documents, large number of students reached their respective colleges but they returned empty handed. NSUI leader Sandeep Kumar said, “Shiksha Bachao Sangharsh Committee consisting leaders of different students groups has been formed and we will protest under this committee in DAV (PG) college in support of common demands including increase in seats on bachelor degree courses and opposing college principal’s decision on release of merit list for admission in different bachelor degree courses”. According to him, college will remain closed unless demands are met.
DAV (PG) College was closed forcibly by the student leaders who later met the principal. Regarding when college will reopen and admission process will resume the principal Devendra Bhasin said that it was possible that college would reopen on Tuesday and annual examination will be held. Admission process may resume after a week or a month. Bhasin said that management and university administration have already been informed about students’ demands. He will follow the instruction given by them.
Dozens of students led by leaders of different groups reached the DBS (PG) College and locked the college gate. later, in presence of heavy police force, the college was reopened and college principal, teaching and non-teaching staff entered the college. later student leaders burnt the effigies of college principal and Garhwal Central University vice chancellor. The protest adversely affected the admission process. The protesters warned that they will continue protesting in the campus unless demands are met. Their demands include increase in seats for bachelor degree courses and increase seats on bachelor degree courses for Uttarakhand board students from five percent to ten
percent. DBS (PG) College Principal OP Kulshrestha said, “We are ready to talk to the student leaders. The college administration has limited power to increase seats due to limited infrastructure.”
